St. Augustine Lighthouse
Located in Florida this is one of the few lighthouses in a populated area. The lighthouse is not open to the public as it is still in service, but the keeper's house has been restored and open as a lighthouse museum. The first lighthouse was completed in 1824,and stood seventy-three feet above sea level and was destroyed by an advancing ocean. But by that time a new lighthouse was built (started in 1872 and finished in 1874)and the keeper lit it first-order lens on Oct.15, 1874. This new lighthouse was more powerful than the old one, could be seen for nineteen miles and stands taller at 161 feet above sea level.
